Annie was talking to her counselor at camp. She is the youngest kid in her bunk. The counselor says, “Annie, you must have a lot of older brothers and sisters because you speak beautifully.”

Annie replies, “No, I’m just very sophisticated.”

I must make a note of the fact that Annie hates it when we talk about her and repeat the cute things she does. This will work until she learns to read (please don’t mention to her that she can’t, she doesn’t know).

We watched “Meet the Robinsons” the other night and she and I stayed up despite her older brother falling asleep. She said, “I have the ability to stay awake that way. Now be supportive!” Her brother proceeded to tell his father that he’d prefer to not get a lecture on the subject.

I like a singer called Taylor Swift. My almost-seven-year-old has some of my music on his ipod in addition to his Hannah Montana and Alvin and the Chimpmunks. She has a lyric (that she changed for radio) in Teardrops on My Guitar that are not PG. My son heard something and said to me, “That’s so damn funny.” As usual, “Where did you learn that word?” He replies, “Mommy and my ipod!”

One day I was driving in the car with Annie and I said, “Thank you for being my daughter.” She didn’t miss a beat. “You’re welcome,” she replied. She paused a second and said, “I didn’t choose to be your daughter, you wished for me. Remember?”

Last night I reminded her, “You’re my dream come true.” She said, “Yeah, pretty much.”

I have two kids. A boy and a girl. The older is 6 and the younger is 4. Since they started talking, I have been cracking up. My husband and I keep a book, but we don’t look a it often and it’s hard to share. I was driving home with my son from Target and he said, “Why don’t ‘do’, ‘to’ and ‘go’ rhyme?” I have no idea, but what a funny observation. What was going through his head as he learns the language? I am going to now keep a blog of the funny things they say. Feel free to share things your kids say, too.
